Are TMJ headaches and jaw problems having a negative impact on your life? You don’t have to settle for a life filled with pain. With simple treatments offered at our Murrieta dental office, TMJ relief is in reach!
Many people suffer with chronic headaches, migraines, and jaw and neck pain without realizing that the source of the problem may be TMJ (temporomandibular joint) dysfunction. Dr. Prais offers a number of simple solutions that address the painful symptoms of TMJ to provide relief and help manage and reduce your discomfort.
What Is TMJ?
TMJ and TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder) encompass a number of problems related to the joint on either side of your jaw, just in front of the ear, that allows the jaw to move up and down and side to side for biting, chewing, talking, yawning, and making facial expressions.
TMJ is also the term commonly used for temporomandibular joint disorders (also referred to as TMJD), which are conditions resulting in limited jaw movement and pain in the jaw and surrounding areas. The temporomandibular joint is one of the body’s most complicated joints and undergoes enormous amounts of pressure as we go about our daily activities of eating and talking.
What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?
The cause of TMJ pain is often difficult to pinpoint and varies widely from one person to the next. But it may be a result of injury, arthritis, stress, or teeth grinding or clenching, as well as a number of medical conditions.
While millions of people suffer from TMJ pain, there currently is no known way of preventing this type of pain from occurring, but there are many effective pain management options available.
What Are the Options for Treating TMJ?
Dr. Prais and his team have been treating TMJ successfully for several years using various treatment methods. Because TMJ covers such a wide variety of causes and symptoms, there is no single treatment that works for everyone. But we are committed to working with you until we find the solution that helps you overcome TMJ pain and get back to your normal activities.
We work to resolve TMJ pain by starting with the most conservative approaches first. For many patients, the pain may be caused by teeth grinding and clenching that results from stress. It is often possible to reduce or eliminate stress-related pain with simple relaxation techniques. If we find that these techniques alone are not effective, we can also prescribe a muscle relaxer until you can manage the stress on your own.
Another option that is very successful with a wide range of patients is a custom-made, FDA-approved night guard. It is designed to be worn during sleep to reduce stress on the jaw joint and provide relief as the joint has a chance to rest.
If we find that these treatment methods are not effective for you, we will be happy to make a referral to get you the help you need. We work with a number of specialists whose area of expertise is treating the symptoms of TMJ.
